The (10+2)* 5 Procrastinator’s Hack

September 8, 2006

If you’re easily distracted, and have lots of smaller things to do (or can break your work up into smaller chunks), 43 Folders has a clever hack to help you get things done, while still allowing some time for play, the (10+2)*5 Hack:

  • 10: Focus, and work for 10 minutes
  • 2: After getting 10 minutes of work done, it’s OK to play or web surf or whatever for two minutes.
  • *5: Repeat four times, and before you know it an hour has passed where work has been done, but play has been allowed too!

Apple to announce a major move into the digital home

September 8, 2006

AppleInsider reports that a Wall Street analyst expects that Apple will announce on September 12, expanding Apple’s options. Apple’s shares rose accordingly.

Generally rumored are new versions of iPod nanos, a new version of Aiport Express allowing wi-fi transmission of videos to your TV, and downloadable movies.

Amazon first with downloadable videos

September 8, 2006

There have been rumors that Apple will sometime soon, maybe even on September 12, announce downloading of videos but Amazon has beaten them. See Unbox.

So far it’s only available in the US.

The fine print says that the Unbox player is required, and the movies are not compatible with Apple hardware, including iPods. The downloads are viewable for up to 30 days, and after you commence viewing the video you have 24 hours to complete it.

Robert Cringely had some comments in his latest Pulpit about Apple vs Amazon for movie downloads.

Update: although Unbox is available, there aren’t too many positive reviews. For example, see the CNET review and user comments
